And what is a dojo, you ask? Joe Hyams in his book
"Zen in the Martial Arts" says:

"A dojo is miniature cosmos where we make contact with ourselves -- our fears, anxieties, reactions, and habits. It is an arena of confined conflict where we confront an opponent who is not an opponent but rather a partner engaged in helping us understand ourselves more fully. It is a place where we can learn a great deal in a short time about who we are and how we react in the world. The conflicts that take place inside the dojo help us handle conflicts that take place outside. The total concentration and discipline required to study martial arts carries over to daily life. The activity in the dojo calls on us to constantly attempt new things, so it is also a source of learning -- in Zen terminology, a source of self-enlightenment."

FO Report: Elspeth

FO Report:  Elspeth
Designer: Laura Long
Pattern Source: Rowan Summer "Magazine" #37
Yarn:
Lion Cotton-Ease in Strawberry Cream
Needle Size:
US 5
Gauge:

21 sts = 4" (a little tight for the cotton-ease, but it worked out well.)
Date Completed:
July 2005
Recipient:  me (of course)

This was a really, really fabulous knit.  I started it the day my mother-in-law arrived from Massachusetts, and I finished it early into our trip to Wyoming, so it was about a 7-day-knit.  (I just love those.)

For a few technical notes, visit The Mustard Zone's
notes on the lace chart, X-treme knitting's adventures, and Kristen's comment on Knitter's Review.

I did the entire back without making a chart, which was really quite difficult because I had to count across on each row to remember where I was while working the shaping, and then start from there, as the chart given was only one repeat long.  However, once I googled up someone's comment on writing up your own chart on knitter's
graph paper, I decided to do that as well, and the charts made all the difference in the world.  If you're wanting to make this sweater, I highly encourage you to make a chart as well.  The fronts flew by!  The sleeves were easy!  No problems with the seaming!  As for the edging ... I'm sure a better crocheter would have found the picot edging a piece of cake, but it seriously took me about four hours to complete.  Well worth the effect, however, and I think it's worth keeping in mind for future edgings.  (Especially on smaller sweaters like this one.)

A few more notes:  I thought I wouldn't have enough Cotton-Ease (I had 630 yards when the 32" pattern called for 700 yards of Calmer), but I had plenty left over.  (Perhaps enough for one more of these?!) So, keep that in mind ... lots of extra yardage left over.  Also, thanks
Cathi and Amy for talking me into making the smaller size ... I think it fits perfectly, though I usually consider myself more of a medium size.  I guess I'm learning that bigger isn't already better when it comes to choosing which size to knit.

Despite the bumps in the knitting pattern, this sweater is so worth it.  I loooove it.  (Those of you who follow this blog know what that means ... that all things come in threes.)  Plus, having purchased the famous cotton-ease at a discontinued price, this sweater cost $9.00 (which balances out the cost of the book, I figure).  Go, Elspeth!

More updates on the "Grand Adventure" in Wyoming to come if I have time tomorrow ... including photos of wildlife and natural wonders, projects casted on, yarn shops visited, and yarn (of course) purchased.  If I don't have time, it will have to wait until the gang's return from the Cape, which is where we're headed on Wednesday through the end of next week.

Nine bucks? That's awesome. :) Makes me want tot tackle another lace project.

I've been to Wyominig some years ago and it was very pretty. The mountains are a nice change of scenery compared to where I live.

Enjoy your trip. :)

I don't know what happened earlier but this one came through just fine for me in regular print. This site loads much faster than the old one, although I'm not sure why?

Anyway, Elspeth is gorgeous and you did such a great job. This really looks great and looks good on you. I'm not surprised you love it.

Nice to get a post from you before you go winging away again.
