And what is a dojo, you ask? Joe Hyams in his book
"Zen in the Martial Arts" says:

"A dojo is miniature cosmos where we make contact with ourselves -- our fears, anxieties, reactions, and habits. It is an arena of confined conflict where we confront an opponent who is not an opponent but rather a partner engaged in helping us understand ourselves more fully. It is a place where we can learn a great deal in a short time about who we are and how we react in the world. The conflicts that take place inside the dojo help us handle conflicts that take place outside. The total concentration and discipline required to study martial arts carries over to daily life. The activity in the dojo calls on us to constantly attempt new things, so it is also a source of learning -- in Zen terminology, a source of self-enlightenment."

UFO's #5, #6, #7 and #8 ... the Baby Sweaters

FO Report: UFO #5, Buffs themed baby sweater
Designer: Yarn Girls
Pattern Source: "Mary Mary" from YG Guide to Kid Knits

Yarn: Wool-Ease
Needle Size:  8
Gauge: 4.5 sts
Date Completed: Feb 2006
Recipient:  ??

This sweater just needed the crocheted edging, and a few buttons, and it's now officially an FO.

I made this sweater back in the fall to go with a cute little CU Buffs outfit that I bought for some friends who used to live in Boulder and who moved away ... unfortunately the sweater was WAY too small to go with the outfit.  Since then, all of my efforts to knit for this baby seem to be cursed as I've officially knit 2 sweaters and started 2 others, only to have my efforts foiled for one reason or another.  I'll soon be casting on one more version for this kid ... we'll see how it goes.

However, despite the rather nontraditional colors used here, I'm thinking I might be able to find a cute newborn outfit with a teddy bear theme that this could go with.  So, until then, this will go off to the dark depths of my son's closet where I stockpile baby gifts ...

FO Report: UFO #6, Second sweater for aforementioned baby
Designer: Tara Jon Manning
Pattern Source: Infant Gift Set, in The Gift Knitter

Yarn: Bernat Cotton Tots
Needle Size:  8
Gauge: 4.5
Date Completed: Feb 2006
Recipient:   Baby Volz

This was the second attempt at making a sweater to go with that drasted aforementioned CU Buffs outfit.  This sweater, though larger than the one above, is still too small ... so it'll go instead to a couple of friends with an unknown-sex baby coming in the spring.

Tara's pattern is so cute and easy -- you knit the front and backs, join at the shoulders with a 3-needle BO, then PU stitches for the sleeves.  What does this mean?  Less finishing at the end!  I love it.  Because the Cotton Tots substituted so well for Mission Falls 1824 cotton, I'll be making more of these in the future for friends ... can't you see it in the pale blue or pale pink Cotton Tots?

As an aside, Tara is an illustrious member of our local Guild, and besides pseudo-attempting to turn in our Master Knitting Programs for TKGA, one of our favorite past times is to dig through the boxes of sweaters that Tara gets back from the publisher after the photo shoots, but before the books are published.  As such, we saw all of the sweaters in the Gift Knitter last year, and I remembered this one in particular as one to make for a future project.  In the gift set, Tara has a little burp cloth to match the sweater ... such a cute idea, and way easier than making a baby blanket!  I highly recommend getting your hands on this book if you haven't yet, as there's a lot of great baby patterns here.

Moving along ...

FO Report: UFO #7, pink and yellow sweater
Designer: Yarn Girls
Pattern Source: "To Bobble or Not" from YG Guide to Kid Knits

Yarn: Cotton Tots
Needle Size:  9
Gauge: 4 sts
Date Completed: Feb 2006
Recipient:  Baby Elise

You can see that why this is one of my favorite kid pattern books ... and once again, the "To Bobble or Not to Bobble."  I think that this is just such a cute pattern!  I'm a little less enamored of the color choices I made here, but, hey -- they work.  One FO more down!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

FO Report: UFO #8, Froggy sweater
Designer: Yarn Girls
Pattern Source: "Mary Mary" from YG Guide to Kid Knits

Yarn: Cotton Tots
Needle Size:  8
Gauge: 4.5 sts
Date Completed: Feb 2006
Recipient:  Baby Dylan

This officially marks this pattern as my favorite in the book.  I have a good friend from grad school who is having a little boy, and she decorated her nursery in a froggy theme ... (Stacey, I hope you're not reading this!)  ... so I of course had to make a sweater to go with.  How perfect are those pajamas with this sweater??  I just need to make a hat and bottees, and I can send these off.

I discovered something with my crochet edging here ... if I work with the WS facing, then the crocheted edging ends up a lot cuter, I think.  Is that how you're supposed to do crochet?  I don't even know.  I worked two rows instead of just one because I forgot to do the button holes on the first round ... and I'm more pleased with two rounds.  I might do this in the future as well.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

(How wrong is it that I found three more baby sweaters in my stash that I still need to finish??)

These are adorable baby sweaters. I really need to break out of my Five Hour Baby Sweater rut. I rarely know that I need to make a baby gift until the last minute and it is usually for one of my husband's friends that I didn't know was pregnant. The 5HBS is easy to fall back on -- actually I am making one now for a baby shower next week.

What cute baby sweaters. I love the Baby Buffs sweater and who wouldn't? Even if it's non-traditional colors, it looks great. I'm so happy you're finishing up some of those UFOs! I bet it feels good to get some of these off of your plate. How many are adult-sized UFOs, I wonder?
