And what is a dojo, you ask? Joe Hyams in his book
"Zen in the Martial Arts" says:

"A dojo is miniature cosmos where we make contact with ourselves -- our fears, anxieties, reactions, and habits. It is an arena of confined conflict where we confront an opponent who is not an opponent but rather a partner engaged in helping us understand ourselves more fully. It is a place where we can learn a great deal in a short time about who we are and how we react in the world. The conflicts that take place inside the dojo help us handle conflicts that take place outside. The total concentration and discipline required to study martial arts carries over to daily life. The activity in the dojo calls on us to constantly attempt new things, so it is also a source of learning -- in Zen terminology, a source of self-enlightenment."

UFO FO#1: Handspun Misty Garden scarf

Here I go!  I'm embarking on the endeavor of not only knitting my Knitting Olympics sweater ... but also trying to bring 16 random UFO's back to life by completing them over the course of the Olympics.  Please don't think I'm an insanely fast knitter ... it's only that I really dread seaming and weaving in ends, so it's pretty easy for me to come up with numerous projects to finish and document.

FO Report: Handspun Misty Garden Scarf
Designer: Jo Sharp
Pattern Source: Scarf Style
Yarn: about 275 yds of about worsted weight llama/silk
Needle Size:  US 9
Gauge: ??
Date Completed: Feb 2006
Recipient:  Me

(This project had its ends woven in on Friday after 2:00 PM, so I can count it, right??)

This is my official first project made from my own handspun yarn.  You might recall that I bought this fiber last weekend at the Creative Festival here in Denver ... it was 4 oz of 80 llama/ 20 silk roving, and I really concentrated on "worsted" while I spun ... thus it's pretty thick-n-thin, but I was in love with it despite its flaws (or, perhaps, because of them?).  It spun up *very* fast, in my opinion.  Based on my estimates, it was about 275 yds.  Here was the yarn pre-knitting:

And the Misty Garden scarf pattern was the perfect choice ... essentially a feather-and-fan lace pattern with one row being a g st (k on the ws).  It ended up being fairly long scarf, and it matches my light blue jacket perfectly.  You can see that the colorings (pre-dyed and purchased that way) were a little random in the scarf ... I learned a lot from this and will keep this in mind as I venture into dying rovings.

Yay!  I seriously love this.

Gorgeous! Wouldn't this actually count as two UFO? I mean you technically finished the spinning, but you could say that it's not really finished until it's part of a FO, and now it is! Pardon the babbling.
